OUR STORY

Hi, we are Antonia and Steve Pettifer, locals from Lower Largo, having lived here for over 20 years (as well as growing up in Leven and Lundin Links).
Over the past 5 years we have developed a passion for cold water therapy.  Having been on trips to Iceland and Finland, Steve has seen first-hand how combining the heat of a sauna with cold water therapy can be extremely beneficial both physically and mentally.
Our goal is to introduce this to the local community and create a social experience that enhances health and wellbeing.

WHERE IT STARTED

Steve’s Story

I had a car crash when I was younger which affected my back and neck, but I was still able to exercise in the way I wanted, and Antonia and I were avid gym goers.  However, when I suffered whiplash in my late 30s, the pain in my neck became chronic and I found I was unable to exercise in the same way so had to adapt.  Over the years, I have tried many traditional ways of achieving pain relief, but all were short term and led to other unwanted side effects.  I then looked into alternative pain management methods. While learning about breathing techniques, I also discovered contrast therapy and have not looked back.  Contrast therapy (alternating hot and cold therapy) can relieve pain by reducing inflammation and promoting muscle relaxation, while medication only offers temporary pain relief. For these reasons, and simply because having a sauna is so enjoyable, I opted for continuing with contrast therapy which has led me to want to share this practice with others.

Antonia’s Story

I was happy to support Steve in his ever-increasing need for cold water therapy but wasn’t keen to join him, choosing instead to read on the beach while he ventured into the water. However, as I became an empty nester and the menopause symptoms ramped up causing greater anxiety for me, I was convinced by Steve to ‘give it ’til Christmas and you’ll see a difference, I promise’. With HRT alongside cold water dipping plus (I’m very happy to say) increased visits to local saunas, I really did see a change in my outlook and was very enthusiastic about joining Steve in his dream to bring the Nordic sauna lifestyle and all its benefits to our local community.

Yes, absolutely. We offer 55-minute sessions as standard, but if you get in touch we can arrange for sessions of 90 mins, 2 or 3 hours, or even more.

Just let us know what you have in mind and we’ll see what we can do.

Many people like to plan their sauna sessions according to the tide at Largo beach, and some who are coming for an evening session also like to factor in where the moon is in its phases.

🌊 You can find the Lower Largo beach tide timetable here.

🌙 And a moon phase calendar here.
